Description
This course provides an introduction to the basics of Communication, Behaviour and AAC. Learn about different reasons for behaviour and gain a greater understanding of how to approach behaviour that challenges and why.
This course also includes overviews of supports in Grid that can help someone communicate and regulate using AAC instead of behaviour that can harm.
This course is designed for beginners and anyone interested in learning about Communication, Behaviour and AAC. This includes professionals new to the field such as Speech and Language professionals, Educators and Occupational Therapists. This course is also suitable for families and those supporting an individual on their AAC journey.
Course outline
This talk covers the foundations of Communication, Behaviour and AAC:
- How behaviour that feels challenging is attached to a reason.
- The pyramid of learning and how foundational skills support communication and behaviour.
- Recognising what communication enables.
- What happens when communication isn’t productive and effective.
- How AAC tools can help someone communicate in many situations and for many reasons.

Learner outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- List 3 reasons that might be attached to behaviours that feel challenging.
- Tell 3 actions or activities in the Voco Chat toolkit that can be used for regulation.
- Describe 3 possible impacts of communication that isn't positive or effective.
Completion requirements: You must complete all course content including reading all text and watching all video content. This course is assessed via a multiple-choice, five-question knowledge check at the end of the course. The pass score is 80%. You can take the knowledge check multiple times.
